Why is my dog still itching after flea treatment?
I have a three year old female pitbull/lab mix. She has been on flea medicine her entire life. Over the past winter, she did not receive the flea treatment as she normally would because I have decided because she is an 'indoor dog', she won't need it as fleas are rare during the winter season. I started her back up on the flea medicine this month as I noticed she was itching. Before the giving her the flea treatment at the beginning of June, I found a couple of fleas on her as well as some flea bites she had itched pretty well. After I gave her the treatment, which is "Advantage Topical Flea Treatment" (21-55lbs) from our local "PetCo". I have gotten flea treatment there before and I have checked the expiration date which is 12/02/2009. I have done this a million times so I know how to properly put the treatment on my dog and I did not bathe her afterwards as it's forbidden after a flea treatment. The box reads "Kills 98-100% of fleas within 12 hours, prevents further flea infestation for 4 weeks, and kills fleas before they lay eggs.." It has been three full days and my dog is still itching quite often. I have heard the bites can be somewhat similar to mesquito bites for humans. Are there any other possibilities for the itching days after the flea treatment?? HELP!
